Tip #01 · Layout

Walk the line before you draw it.

LayoutBrownfield

Before routing any new line in a revamp project, physically walk the corridor with a tape measure. What is on the drawing is rarely what is actually there.

When you receive a new P&ID, take the time to trace each line systematically. On complex P&IDs where lines cross and overlap, use colored highlighters to trace each line by fluid service or system. This simple technique can save hours of confusion and prevent routing errors before you ever open your 3D model.

From the book
It sounds elementary — it is also what the most experienced designers still do on every project. Experience does not eliminate the need for discipline. It reinforces it.

The takeaway: Never start routing from a drawing alone on a brownfield project. Ten minutes of field verification saves days of rework. The corridor you see in the model and the corridor that exists in the plant are two different things until you have personally confirmed otherwise.
