Formula & Data Source
Empty pipe mass per unit length  =  (π/4) × (OD² − ID²) × ρ_pipe Content mass per unit length     =  (π/4) × ID² × ρ_content Insulation mass per unit length  =  (π/4) × ((OD+2t_i)² − OD²) × ρ_insul
OD / Wall thickness sources: ASME B36.10M (welded and seamless wrought steel pipe) and ASME B36.19M (stainless steel pipe). Values are nominal — actual mill tolerances typically allow ±12.5% on wall thickness.

Content assumption: the pipe is fully filled. For gas or partially filled lines, adjust the content density accordingly.

Brownfield note: on lines older than 10 years or in corrosive service, verify actual wall thickness by UT before using this value for support design. As-built deviations from nominal are common.
⚠ For preliminary sizing only Results are based on nominal ASME dimensions and typical material densities. They do not account for manufacturing tolerances, coatings, supports, flanges, fittings, corrosion allowance, or actual site conditions. All final designs must be verified by a qualified engineer and validated against the applicable code edition. Piping Passion accepts no liability for decisions made using this tool.
